ROI

Anthem Publishing runs six core magazine brands. With titles like Vegan Food & Living, Women’s Running, Classic Pop, and Colouring Heaven, they’re all about helping people dive deeper into their passions. Each brand has its own editorial site, shop, newsletter, and community.

Anthem has a small team wearing a lot of hats. Digital Editors double as Client Managers. Marketing Managers handle everything from Black Friday campaigns to automations.

A disconnected web experience

The editorial websites had basic article recommendations built by developers, but they weren’t always serving the right content. Recipe lovers sometimes get news articles instead of more recipes.

With the business relying on banners for advertising as well as promoting relevant content, there wasn’t enough banner space to go around. There was no easy way to promote magazine subscriptions without showing the same offers to existing subscribers. Marketing and the Ad Sales team were getting frustrated.

Once on the site, the team was reliant on text links in articles to generate leads. Pop-ups and forms were separate, rather than embedded, with the extra step causing traffic to drop off.

And with separate editorial and shop websites, connecting the two took manual work.

High-effort email builds

On top of managing the website, the team was building three email newsletters a week for Vegan Food & Living alone, plus weekly sends for other brands. Every article link in the emails was manually chosen, which was very time-consuming.

The team needed a solution that could deliver more personalized experiences across web and email, across multiple brands, without scaling headcount.

The solution

Dotdigital personalization provided the perfect solution for both the marketing and editorial teams. Rachel Smith, Digital Editor on Vegan Food & Living, summed up the appeal: “We’re quite a small company with really limited resources. Anything that helps us boost our traffic without us having to do lots of extra work was really appealing.”

Tailored website experience that supports everyone’s objectives

Dedicated website banner slots with smart targeting rules were set up using location, subscriber status, and visit frequency to show a relevant message to each visitor.

New visitors now see a lead generation message encouraging them to sign up for the newsletter. Return visitors, or those already in the email list, see a subscription offer tailored to how new they are. Existing subscribers never see subscription offers.

The marketing team can tailor the right content to everyone. No more negotiating with Ad Sales. Best of all, the results picked up. Brands that hadn’t converted from web banners in years started converting.

Content recommendations that keep visitors on site

Rachel replaced the old content recommendation system that appears on article pages with SmartBlocks. Rules like “last browsed” and “frequently browsed” surface more relevant article recommendations that encourage people to keep reading. Pages per visit have since jumped from 1.6 to 1.82 — a 14% increase.

This approach has also been used to keep sponsors happy. A bespoke recommendations block was built for an energy company who sponsor a category on the site. The block only shows on their articles, keeping readers engaged with their content and boosting reach without constant manual promotion.

Email conversions on autopilot

The power of Dotdigital is being able to create a joined-up, personalized experience across all marketing channels.

Like on the website, Rachel added automated SmartBlocks to the weekly newsletters, showing articles and recipes the recipient has previously browsed on the website. Clicks from these emails drive 500 extra visits to the website per send, at very low effort.

The health newsletter now has a fully automated section where the platform picks the most relevant lead article from its catalog of thousands. It often surfaces older articles that the team had forgotten about. The result: 1,000 extra clicks per newsletter – a 30% lift on previous performance.

And it’s not just about adding personalized content into existing emails to increase conversions. A new, fully automated monthly round-up has been introduced to engaged subscribers with personalized carousels from major site categories. It launched recently and is already generating 1,000 extra website visits per send.

The Shop team also now sends two monthly automated emails showing things like “recently browsed but not bought.”

Encouraging action using countdown timers
Both the editorial and shop teams use real-time countdown timers to drive urgency. Editorial uses them for advertiser deadlines, marketing drops them into Black Friday campaigns.

As a small company with limited resources, anything that helps us boost our traffic without requiring lots of extra work is invaluable. Dotdigital has been really good for that – the SmartBlocks do the heavy lifting for us.

The website product recommendations playbook https://dotdigital.com/resources/the-website-product-recommendations-playbook/ Mon, 03 Feb 2025 14:54:07 +0000 https://dotdigital.com/?post_type=crb_resource&p=85524 Capturing new subscribers in store https://dotdigital.com/blog/capturing-new-subscribers-in-store/ Fri, 19 Jul 2024 08:45:00 +0000 https://dotdigital.com/?p=105336 As marketers, we’re always looking for new ways to connect with customers at relevant touchpoints. Harnessing data online about customer behavior and interests makes it easier than ever to connect with your customers and develop long-lasting relationships.

But what about customers who aren’t online? Many customers still prefer shopping in-store, meaning it’s difficult for you to connect with them outside of their store visits to enhance their experience with your brand. Collecting email addresses and marketing consent from your in-store customers can help you connect with them when they’re not in-store.

Building a huge list of in-store customers might be tempting, but focus on getting good data first. This keeps your emails out of spam folders and landing in inboxes where customers will see them.

Don’t forget to implement double opt-in so that new subscribers need to verify their email address before they start receiving emails from you. This helps you maintain a high-quality list of valid and reachable email addresses. Sending emails to email addresses that contain typos increases your risk of emails bouncing or sending emails to spam traps, which can negatively impact your sender reputation.

Challenges collecting data in store

Capturing consent in store presents its own unique challenges. Your staff need to have conversations with customers to inform them about your marketing emails and be able to capture email addresses efficiently. Recording a customer’s email address that has been provided verbally can result in typos and errors meaning that you’re never able to reach the intended recipient.

Customers may also feel under pressure to consent to receive emails at the checkout in order to complete their transaction and may provide false or inaccurate details if they don’t see value in providing their own email address. Sending emails that are unwanted or unexpected will lead to customers reporting emails as spam which will harm your sender reputation and deliverability.

How to improve data collection in store

You may be wondering how you can extend your customer engagement beyond the purchase point and connect with in-store customers meaningfully. Gathering valuable data from these shoppers can help you build stronger relationships and personalize their brand experience, even after they leave your store. Let’s explore strategies for effectively collecting high-quality data from your in-store customers.

Transparency builds trust

Always respect customer privacy by outlining how their data will be used. This is a core principle of responsible marketing. Manage expectations about the types of emails they can expect to receive and how often, so they know exactly what they’re opting in to receive. This transparency builds trust and fosters a positive relationship with your customers.

Educate staff for accuracy

Educate staff about the importance of capturing accurate data. There’s little value in spending time collecting and inputting data if typos and errors mean that you can’t reach the intended recipients.

Empower customers, minimize errors

Minimize human error in the data capture process to improve the quality of the data you collect. Allowing customers to self-serve through POS integrations can significantly improve accuracy. Here are some options to consider:

  • POS integrations:
Modern point-of-sale (POS) systems such as Retail Express integrate with Dotdigital, enabling customers to sign up for your email list directly at checkout. This eliminates manual data entry and reduces errors.
  • QR codes and NFC tags:
Utilize QR codes or NFC tags at the checkout which direct users to a dedicated signup page. Staff can encourage customers to scan the QR code or tap the NFC tag to learn about the benefits of subscribing and enter their email address.
  • Printed receipts:
Utilize space on printed receipts to capture new subscribers by including a printed QR code and instructions to scan the code, or a link that customers can type into their browser to visit a dedicated signup page.
  • Tablets at checkout:
Install tablets or other devices that invite customers to sign up to receive your emails. Include the benefits of subscribing, information about what emails they can expect to receive, and key information about how you’ll manage their data.
  • Inventory management:
Dotdigital APAC customers can use Cin7 to improve data collection by integrating inventory, POS, and warehouse management, providing a comprehensive view of customer behavior.

Now you’ve collected email addresses from your instore customers, what’s next?

Make sure the emails you send are aligned with the expectations you set when you gain consent. Send emails that provide value to your customers and are relevant to their interests. Sending a welcome campaign upon sign up is the perfect way to remind customers that they’ve recently opted in to receive emails and to reiterate what your customers can expect from your emails. At the same time, you can direct customers to your preference center so they can let you know which emails they’re interested in receiving.

ScentAir sees an impressive 18% recovery rate for abandoned carts, in just six months https://dotdigital.com/case-studies/scentair/ Mon, 17 Apr 2023 15:56:17 +0000 https://dotdigital.com/?post_type=crb_case_study&p=54240

Enhancing US ecommerce customer experience

ScentAir came to the Dotdigital Americas team looking to provide a better ecommerce customer experience for its existing US consumer audience, and support in its ecommerce expansion into other regions. Finding a customer experience platform that offers support in various international regions was crucial to the company’s growth. Dotdigital has a strong market presence in the US, across EMEA, and in APAC. This global positioning naturally comes with in-region support and expertise, so it was a perfect fit.

ScentAir needed support in managing the various customer data privacy laws around the globe. It was important to the brand that data privacy laws and best-practice was followed in each region, to ensure deliverability and that the overall brand reputation remained positive.

In addition to supporting its ecommerce needs, ScentAir also uses Salesforce to manage their B2B automation needs. Dotdigital is one of the few marketing providers that has great integrations to both industries.

Dotdigital’s Adobe Commerce and Salesforce integration streamlines operations and analytics

The Dotdigital regional teams were able to work with ScentAir to understand and meet the various regulations and data privacy laws in place across the globe. The Dotdigital Customer Success team suggested a multi-store set up using the Adobe Commerce integration, which allows ScentAir to separately manage the customer lists for each region.

Our premier partnership with Adobe Commerce meant our connector is able to sync customer account information to the correct database sets. Our Salesforce integration was also incredibly valuable, simplifying data management and syncing leads to and from Salesforce for ultimate cross-platform collaboration.

When it comes to seeing results, Dotdigital offers reporting at account-level, per region, and per regional storefront. Cross-account analytics also mean that the global management team can see marketing performance across the entire business. This flexibility allows brands to create whatever setup makes sense for them. It’s the best of both worlds; separation when you need it, with no compromise when it comes to the bigger picture.

Our partnership with Dotdigital has helped enhance our cross-channel platform capabilities and improve our end-to-end integrations. The collaboration with our customer success manager and Dotdigital support team has helped us maximize performance and discover new functionalities.

Megan Fallaw, CRM Lead, ScentAir

Boosting repeat purchases, recovery rates and sales through enhanced customer experience

ScentAir has seen some incredibly encouraging results since joining Dotdigital. After just six months its US store saw an increase of over 300% in repeat purchasers. This clearly demonstrates the impact a positive customer experience will have on shoppers when it comes to choosing your brand over competitors and in a climate of high acquisition costs, these are especially significant results.

Marketing automation also proved very successful for the brand. ScentAir saw an impressive 18% recovery rate for abandoned carts in just six months. The brand also saw a huge 200% increase in sales overall, a fantastic achievement in times of economic struggle around the globe.

Embracing Dotdigital’s personalization, SMS, and loyalty program to amplify success

ScentAir is now expanding and applying their learnings to all other regions following on from their success in the US. Using Dotdigital’s advanced personalization tools, ScentAir is able to create tailored campaigns with dynamic content to ensure accurate messaging is served to customers in each region – all whilst recognizing and adapting to varying time zones.

Having seen such encouraging results from email marketing automations, ScentAir is now expanding into other channels. The brand is currently trialing SMS for promotional messages and will soon add transactional SMS, available through the Adobe Commerce integration, to their capabilities to further the brand’s cross-channel strategy.

To capitalize on the increasing loyalty the brand has already seen, ScentAir is also working with Dotdigital integration partner Yotpo to build out a personalized loyalty program for its clients.

ScentAir won the Best Newcomer award at the US Dotties 2022, an accolade to the team’s fantastic achievements in such a short space of time. With such strong results early on, and plans to utilize the Dotdigital platform even more, we’re excited to see what comes next.

Based in Melbourne, with more than 10,000 items for people of all ages, the retailer ships costumes all over Australia and New Zealand. Turning 13 in 2021, the company has shipped more than 500,000 costumes to date.

Seeking an automation partner to engage customers and drive growth

With the growing popularity of costumes in Australia and New Zealand, Costumes.com.au wanted to enhance its marketing strategy to gain a competitive edge. Additionally, the team realized that the company’s sizable database needed a thorough clean-up to segment active and inactive customers. Hence, the retailer was on the lookout for a marketing automation partner to address those challenges and market more strategically to engage customers.

Success with Dotdigital marketing automation

In November 2020, Costumes.com.au partnered with Dotdigital as its marketing automation provider to help with segmentation, gain detailed customer insights and ultimately drive increased customer engagement. “Technology has been our strong suit and at the forefront in addressing issues along the way,” said Anita Williams, Marketing Manager at Costumes.com.au. “Thanks to Dotdigital, not only do we have access to more customer data and insights, but also better engagement rates.”

Costumes.com.au has used Dotdigital to run successful automated programs – welcome series, anniversary email campaigns, abandoned cart and abandoned browse programs. As part of the welcome series, the brand has sent emails to customers asking about preferences. This strategy has seen positive traction, with an increasing number of customers updating their profiles, enabling the team to use the data to craft personalized campaigns.

“The journey with Dotdigital has been a huge success; our creative vision and Dotdigital’s capability to turn it into reality has delivered outstanding results,” said Anita. “Deep diving into customer interests and data, effective segmentation, and targeting has resulted in lower unsubscribe rates, better open rates, and zero email fatigue. Our anniversary campaign resulted in revenue uplift, while our recent Easter campaign, had amazing customer engagement.”

As parties and celebrations came to a pause during the COVID-19 pandemic, the brand created innovative ways to engage with customers. Known to push its creative boundaries, Costumes.com.au educated consumers on alternate, safer ways to party. The brand never failed to engage with its customers, encouraging them to download free invitations for online celebrations, celebrating Halloween at home, while encouraging parents to host virtual parties for kids.

“One of the key projects on the horizon is the Magento 2 migration. In the near future, we plan to run loyalty and rewards strategies using the Dotdigital Recency, Frequency, and Monetary (RFM) value modelling tool. We are also excited about our upcoming Halloween-based lead nurturing program,” commented Anita.

Thanks to Dotdigital, not only do we have access to more customer data and insights, but also better engagement rates.

Converse gain greater footing in international markets with the power of live chat https://dotdigital.com/case-studies/converse/ Wed, 07 Jul 2021 09:42:52 +0000 https://dotdigital-tst.dotdigital.com/?post_type=customer&p=9845

Best known for its Chuck Taylor All Star and One Star styles, Converse now offers a broad range of footwear and apparel designed to celebrate the individuality of every customer.

Expanding globally and seeking a marketing automation platform

Converse had set its sights on expanding its global presence, particularly in Latin America, and was in search of a marketing automation provider that would support the company as it introduced its shoes and clothing to new customers. Converse knew that personalized, scalable marketing programs would play a critical role in its efforts to connect with a larger audience.

Embracing live chat and personalization

The team at Converse heard that Dotdigital was the leading marketing automation provider for ecommerce platform Magento, and they set up a meeting to learn more about Dotdigital’s offerings. During the discussion, Converse quickly discovered everything that the Dotdigital platform had to offer — not to mention the added perk of having on-the-ground support in Spanish. After conferring with its teams, Converse made the decision to use Dotdigital as its marketing automation provider of choice for Converse Mexico.

Converse believed that a personalized experience was key to its efforts to reach more customers across the country — and that one of the most important ways to create that connection was by embracing live chat as a preferred channel of communication. The stats are clear: 44% of consumers consider real-time chat the most important feature of an ecommerce website, and a further 55% say they would abandon a transaction if they can’t find the answer to their question. By engaging one-on-one with customers and offering immediate responses, Converse knew that it could remove barriers to sale.

Known for pushing the boundaries, Converse wanted to take engagement a step further. The plan? The team would turn live chat into an acquisition channel to expand their footprint in new markets. Working closely with the Dotdigital team, they developed a strategy to use the Dotdigital live chat tool to not only keep their existing customers happy with top-notch customer service, but also acquire new customers through information obtained in data capture forms in the chat. Along with live chat, Converse used Dotdigital’s landing page and form builder to increase customer engagement and interest. These solutions were especially important when it came to limited-edition product launches, like the Bugs Bunny 80th Anniversary collection.

Who knew, a simple ‘Hola!, En qué puedo ayudarte?

The Converse Team

Accelerating growth and customer engagement for Converse Mexico

Their strategy was a huge success. Live chat has proven to be an important growth tool for Converse Mexico, with 29% of the company’s marketing list now captured via Dotdigital live chat. More than a quarter of these contacts are now paying customers and represent 31% of total orders. What’s more, these customers show a greater propensity to buy, with an average purchase window of 13 days, compared to the established 19 days for customers who haven’t had the benefit of five-star live chat service.

Live chat has set an excellent foundation for Converse to further develop distinct customer cohorts that are ready for retargeting and marketing nurture programs. In addition, clear segmentation and implementation of an abandoned cart program have helped the team win over their newly acquired customers, with repeat purchase rates tripling just months after onboarding with Dotdigital.

To quote the Converse team, “Who knew, a simple ‘Hola!, En qué puedo ayudarte?” could go such a long way?”

What’s also helped Converse accelerate its marketing strategy in the LatAm market is Dotdigital’s position as a truly global provider of marketing technology. Visitors to the Converse Mexico website see live chat in Spanish, which means that no opportunity or key information is lost in translation — ensuring their shopping experience is elevated and relevant.

The Converse team benefits, too. With round-the-clock assistance from Dotdigital’s Spanish-speaking support team, they can get all the answers they need as they build out their international footprint.

Continuing to utilize Dotdigital’s cross-channel solutions

Converse has been continuing its quest to increase awareness in new markets by leveraging Dotdigital’s multichannel solutions. Combining Dotdigital’s segmentation features with decision nodes within the automation program, Converse has developed a plan to target only those customers who visited its website via Google Ads and Facebook Audience, allowing the team to engage relevant customers with truly personalized messages.

Strategy to personalize marketing and re-engage dormant customers

Le Col’s main aim was to maximize the most important sales period of the year, driving success in the run up to the Black Friday weekend and beyond. Part of this initiative would include increasing the membership of Le Col’s loyalty program, ‘Rewards for Riding’. To engage audiences, the team wanted to speak directly to its customers – using personalization and dynamic content based on contact information. Plus, there would be a concerted effort to re-engage dormant contacts, bringing them back into the brand fold.

Customized Black Friday offers with Dotdigital’s personalization features

Using Dotdigital’s marketing automation tool, the team set up an automated journey from November 20th to 30th consisting of 10 daily deal offers. Taking a different approach to loyalty members, these customers enjoyed early access to all Black Friday daily deals at once, 48 hours before their release to the general public. What’s more, Dotdigital’s personalization features and integration with Shopify allowed Le Col to serve recipients different creative and content based on:

Need for growth and enhanced customer engagement strategy

Low Cost Glasses was only six months old when making the decision to move to Dotdigital. The brand’s Head of Marketing had used the omnichannel marketing automation software previously and was a strong advocate not just of the platform itself, but also the high level of support that comes with it. This proved essential when starting from scratch with creating a robust customer communication plan to build an engaged database.

Although, as a brand Low Cost Glasses was in its infancy, and was on a steep trajectory of fast growth thanks to having an agile team that could make quick decisions and heavy investment in the right marketing channels. The brand’s Dotdigital debut also coincided neatly with the launch of its first TV ad campaign – another significant reason for needing a sophisticated, user-friendly CRM tool to cater for the increase in customer data; plus the ability to segment and communicate with audiences on a more personal level.

Email strategy drives competitive edge and customer loyalty

As the marketing lead had Dotdigital knowledge already, the whole team was able to hit the ground running after a little refresher. As a very lean team, the functionality of the automated marketing programs would play a huge role in the brand’s overall email strategy, and Dotdigital’s service would become almost another member of the team. To future-proof success, Low Cost Glasses immediately set about building out the essential foundations of its automated campaigns: the multi-step welcome, birthday, abandoned cart and browse campaigns, which have all been tweaked and strengthened along the way as the team gets to know its customer base and what makes them tick.

Since Low Cost Glasses occupies a very competitive discount market, strong sales-led comms is at the core of the brand’s strategy and is one of the reasons why its return rate is so strong. So, alongside the automated campaigns, the team sends out regular offers with different messaging based on the customer lifecycle and previous buying behavior – and, of course, those who haven’t popped their LCG cherry yet!

The automation programs are always beavering away, working hard for the brand behind the scenes like an invisible extra employee.

Alex Butcher, Head of Marketing, Low Cost Glasses

Harnessing Dotdigital automation for soaring engagement and revenue

Low Cost Glasses’ use of data-driven marketing and automation best practice has led to some sensational results. The figures speak for themselves:

  • The brand’s database doubled within four weeks of using Dotdigital
  • 63% of its database is considered ‘engaged’, opening emails regularly
  • Weekly email open rates increased by 10% and sit comfortably around the 25% to 27% mark for standard sends
  • Automated open rates are between 45% and 55%
  • Monthly email revenue has increased by 275%

Next steps: Low Cost Glasses is set to launch its lapsed customers and re-engagement programs, on its one-year birthday. The team will also be strengthening its automated programs so that they work even harder for the brand. Product recommendations are also on the cards…

Having used a multitude of omnichannel marketing automation platforms over the years, it’s safe to say with hand on heart that Dotdigital is my number one choice.

Alex Butcher – Head of Marketing

Alex continued, “The graphic user interface is so user-friendly, it allows you to kid yourself that you’re an email design genius. The automation programs are always beavering away, working hard for the brand behind the scenes like an invisible extra employee, which is perfect for a lean team. The in-depth reporting means that you can constantly learn, test, and improve your comms – and the segmentation tool gives you the power to carve, slice and dice your data and tailor your messaging to the enth degree. Finally, if I’ve said it once, I’ve said it a gazillion times, the live chat tech support function is absolutely second to none.
